Local prosecutor weighs in on swimmer sentence

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) –  The Montgomery County Prosecutor released a letter Friday addressing the recent sentencing of an Oakwood native in a sexual assault that has gained national attention.

The letter was signed by both Prosecutor Mat Heck and the director of the victim/witness division, Sandra Hunt.

In the letter Heck addresses the sentencing of Brock Turner saying, “We, like many of out colleagues throughout the country, believe that the disappointing and inappropriate sentence in that case will have a chilling effect on victims coming forward to report sexual violence.”

The letter goes on to point out statistics that show as much as 85-percent of on-campus sexual assaults go unreported and please for more education on the law and the meaning of consent.

Heck also reminds people the prosecutor’s office provides 24-hour crisis hotline and 24-hour response to all sexual assault victims who report to hospital emergency departments. You can call that hotline anytime at (937) 225-5623.
